Pacific Northwest Coast Kwakwaka’wakw Cedar Painted Dance Rattle Bukwus
Bukwus is a supernatural creature, a skeletal, long-haired figure from Kwakwaka’wakw mythology, Man of the Sea. We see in this rattle the back of a skeletal figure with a human body and a Bukwus mask face, painted in blue and black, the lips and the ears are painted red. He looks like he is holding onto a shell, scalloped rounded end lines. The rattle is carved out of two pieces of red cedar, two halves together. It has a soft light rattle. It is displayed on a stand. It measures 8 inches tall x 3 ½ inches wide.
