Grenfell Industries Hooked Map of Newfoundland Labrador
For sale is this original hand hooked rug made from silk stockings from Grenfell Industries. From the first quarter of the 19th century, is has finely hand hooked on a burlap background. It depicts a stylized map of Newfoundland and Labrador on the east coast of Canada. It shows Native villages tee pees and igloos, the North wind blowing in the upper right corner, a sailboat in full sail, a spouting whale, and a directional compass showing North, South, East and West. Grenfell Industries was a Mission, that established this cottage Industries making handicrafts. This piece has the original label sewn on the back. In fair good condition, it has an old look and colour to it. There is a stitch or two missing. Some light staining. It came from a collection of an important Canadian Art collector. It measures 22 ¾ x 18 inches.
