Eskimo Inuit Art Polar Bear & Seal Carving by Inneak Akavak 1970’s

 

Her name is also spelt Ineak Akavak or Inneak Akavak, she was born in 1941 in Kimmirut or Lake Harbour Qikiqtaaluk Region, Shore of Hudson Strait on Baffin Island Meta Incognita Peninsula, Nunavut. Formally a Hudson Bay Company and Royal Canadian Mounted Police post. In 2016 Population 389, just to give you an idea.

This fine carving is made of Soapstone or Steatite light green in colour with darker inclusions. It depicts a Polar Bear with a Seal. Circa 1970 to 1980 this is an estate piece and was collected at that time. It weighs 4.500 kilos, it stands 8 ½ inches tall x 9 inches wide and 4 inches deep. It is signed ever so slightly incised on the back of the Polar bear’s leg. It is marked with a c in a circle “Inneak Akavak”.
