Nuu-chah-nulth Basket Knitting Beaver Whale Native Art

This is a large original Nuu-chah-nulth knitting basket, it has a hole in the center for the wool yarn to come out of, the basket holds the wool. This style of fine workmanship come from the Northwest Coast of British Columbia, Vancouver Island. It is hand woven with a wrapped twine technique using bear, or sea grass and cedar bark. The would use natural dyes, the purple is Salal berries. It depicts two beavers , 4 whales, two birds. This lidded pictorial basket, circa 1920 was made for the tourist, collector trade. Inside the colours are vibrant. In good condition it measures 6 ¼ inches wide, x 3 ¼ inches tall.
