Nagaland Authentic Indigenous Gathering Basket Cane Bamboo
This is from a Canadian Collection that was gathered in the 1970’s. These were not made for the tourist trade. C. 1900 – 50, this is from Nagaland, N. E. India, tribal groups known as being headhunters. Also known for their exquisite bamboo and cane weaving, with expert basket makers.
This is an open work, star basketry weave, with twisted cordage for shoulder strap. Dark brown smooth patina. Made to be worn on the back, flat on one side, loop and knot on the other side. In good condition, it measures 16 x 11 ½ x 7 inches
I call this a functional ethnographic gathering basket.
