Product Description

Early American Folk Art Kaleidoscope Scrimshaw Brass 19th C. Antique Engraved Snake, Bird, Flowers Kaleidoscopes came to American as early as 1818. This lovingly made piece of folk art, is engraved similar to a scrimshaw design, of a swan, flowers and leaves in pot, long tail bird, and a snake running along the seam. Made for “ARLEEN” engraved in a ribbon border. C. 1800’s. North American Toy. Made from brass, it has 8 sections in the kaleidoscope, filled with gemstone colored glass, Ruby and Garnet red, Peridot and Emerald green, Citrine Amber yellow, and clear stones. I do not know if these are real gemstones or glass. The glass shards fill about a third of the chamber. It sits on a new made wooded stand It still works, looking into the light, it shows beautiful colors, and designs, I enjoyed looking through it. The glass is a frosted hand cut glass. It has a soft solder seam. Some denting, overall good condition. The kaleidoscope measures 10 ¾ inches long, x 2 ¼ inches across, on the top, and 1 inch across at the eye piece. Kalos = beautiful, Eidos = form, Scopos = watch .
